“Queen’s Counsel” Designation for Shea Nerland LLP Founding Partner

Nerland Lindsey LLP (formerly Shea Nerland Calnan LLP) is pleased to announce that one of its founding partners, Dennis Nerland, has been chosen for inclusion in a select group of lawyers that will receive the designation of “Queen’s Counsel”.  In making the announcement, the Attorney General for the Province of Alberta stated: “The Queen’s Counsel designation recognizes the exceptional capabilities and talents of this year’s impressive group. These lawyers are a credit to their profession and to their province.”

The history of Queen’s Counsel in England dates back to the 16th century. The practice of appointing Queen’s Counsel was continued in Canada and predates Confederation. The first Queen’s Counsel appointees were admitted in Upper Canada in 1841.  Modern practice has been for the Attorney General to call for Q.C. applications from the public every second September for appointment on the final day of every other year.  All applications are reviewed by the Law Society of Alberta’s Queen’s Counsel Screening Committee and recommendations for appointment are then submitted to the Minister and Cabinet for consideration and final selection. In Alberta, the Lieutenant Governor in Council appoints the Queen’s Counsel recipients.

Mr. Nerland provides tax and estate planning services to a wide range of high net worth clients and their businesses. He also acts as a trustee for a large number of private wealth preservation and accumulation trusts and as a director of various private businesses, holding and investment companies and TSX and TSXV listed public companies.

Mr. Nerland has a commitment to on-going education and learning — a cornerstone in addressing today’s business opportunities and challenges.  His on-going education and legal background provide a balance when navigating between operational functioning and strategic thinking, necessary to be an effective leader in the board room.

The partners of Nerland Lindsey LLP expressed that they “are delighted Dennis has received such recognition for his years of dedication and commitment.”
